Stephen Guerreiro - Resident Scholar of THE EXAMINED LIFE

Stephen Guerriero

Educational Director & Resident Scholar

Stephen has taught for over 15 years in the Needham Public Schools as a middle school Social Studies teacher, with a primary focus on ancient history, archaeology, and geography. He has worked to incorporate the science of archaeology, the digital humanities, and areas of art history in teaching ancient cultures. He is a firm believer that students should learn not just what we know about the past, but how we know it, and how our understandings have changed over time.

Stephen first fell in love with ancient history, and specifically Classical Studies while a student at Boston Latin School. He continued his studies in ancient history, Latin, and Italian at Boston University, and later earned a M.Ed. from the Lynch School of Education at Boston College. In 2015, Stephen completed an M.A. in Ancient Greek and Roman Studies at Brandeis University. The program there has allowed him to participate in archaeological digs in both Greece and Italy, and to deepen his knowledge of Greek and Latin literature and history.

Stephen is looking forward to future excavations in Greece with the Southern Phokis Regional Project, a multidisciplinary exploratory dig close to Delphi. Stephen is also a leader in his local teachers’ union and a Member of the Educator Advisory Board of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The Board advises the MFA on all its educational programming, school outreach, and teacher professional development. Stephen’s areas of interest within Greek Studies include the Homeric epics, mythology, archaeology, and cultural diffusion.

When he’s not working, Stephen loves traveling with his husband Ángel, cooking, and spending lots of time inside museums.
