Participation & Credits

“You can’t imagine Greece unless you’ve been there and seen it.”
—Christina DiPietro

It is our expectation that all participants:

  • Prepare for each seminar by completing assigned readings and previewing multimedia resources as instructed
  • Actively attend each of the seminars and approach each topic with curiosity
  • Participate in the online discussions on Google Classroom after each seminar, demonstrating deep engagement with the subject matter
  • Find ways to translate new learning into active instructional practice with students in the classroom
  • Travel to Greece as part of the Study Tour, attending on-site lectures, archaeological visits, and group discussions.

ExL Fellows seeking 75 PDPs will receive a certificate of completion upon the conclusion of the semester. THE EXAMINED LIFE is a certified professional development provider approved and listed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Participants taking the course for PDPs do not receive a letter grade.

To earn graduate credit:

ExL Greek Study Fellows seeking 3 graduate credits from Fitchburg State University will receive a more detailed syllabus with specific requirements, FSU resources, and instructions on how to register for the course through their online portal.

In addition to the above expectations, participants earning graduate credits are also required to:

  • Engage with a higher volume of reading and multimedia resources – videos, podcasts, and databases
  • Plan and implement a project that translates their learning from the course to active instructional strategies – through lesson plans, collaborative or interdisciplinary units, comprehensive classroom resources, or other well-designed activity to engage students in understanding the legacy, history, and culture of the Greeks
  • ExL Fellows seeking graduate credits will register directly through Fitchburg State University and pay tuition to the Registrar. Transcripts will be available upon conclusion of the spring semester and are issued directly through FSU.

We are always happy to answer questions or clarify any of the requirements. Along with the core mission of THE EXAMINED LIFE, we seek to inspire and not overwhelm. Our course is designed with working educators in mind.
